The Smell, Sounds, and Sights of Haiti in Short Stories

To read Zombi, You My Love is to immerse yourself in Haiti. Through the stories of people, mostly in the time of the fall of Baby Doc, one catches glimpses of the rich diversity of the culture. The stories are, for the most part, loosely tied together with characters recurring throughout the book. The language in the book feels dead-on, as do the descriptions of the people and places. Some of the stories recount the work of Americans in Haiti; while a few are true humanitarians who understand and respect the people and the culture, many are feckless interlopers who have agendas that have little to do with the improving the quality of life of Haitians. The books offers unflinching views lives doomed, regained, and wasted. Reading the book was a thoroughly enjoyable, sometimes uncomfortable experience. I would highly recommend it.
