Best Zombie/Samurai/Ninja/Space Alien Graphic Novel ever!

If you have seen Grindhouse, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's tribute to the exploitation films of the 1970s, you will probably have an appreciation of this graphic novel. This story has a flavor of mixed genre fun that could have been the third part of a Grindhouse Triple feature. The story takes place in Feudal era Japan. We are introduced to Fume, a Samurai on a fairly simple mission for his Lord. En Route, he discovers the dead have come back to life and dispatches a few of them before meeting Ishida, a Ninja, who grudgingly joins forces with him to fight the armies of darkness, which can communicate and consist of animals as well as humans. Further down the road they meet up with Uzu, a mute who wishes to become one with the mountain retreat they find him at. Despite his stoic personality, he is just as skilled as the other two in waging war on the dead, and perhaps even moreso. This fairly brief tale covers their exploits, which are fast, furious, and quite gory. Despite the grim subject matter, the story keeps things light and relaxed, with the three comrades, especially Ishida, making jokes and having snappy comebacks. This is particularly true when he meets up with some former associates who are now dead and looking to have him 'switch sides' to being dead and loving it. Yes, there is an alien presence in this book, but I won't go into details there. Lets just say this book is pure fantasy, is pretty simple, and lots of fun. My complaint would be with the simple drawings. All in black in white and many frames are (purposely?) muddled and hard to really determine what is exactly going on. Lots of combat, which means lots of whirling swords and ninja stars, etc. but again, sometimes not incredibly easy to follow. For what it is, this one is entertaining. If you are not expecting much more than a brief respite from reality that is what you will get...a little bit of fun, violence, and fantasy.
