I offer here a simple recommendation for a book which costs little and which is a key visual reference. I have 3 photo books from this photographer, Kazuhiko Mizuno. He is among the most authoritative photographers in Japan for the gardens of Kyoto. His books (like this one here, with English text) are the ones still being sold at most major gardens and the bookshops in the region (i.e. Kansai Airport), which is where i bought mine. The text here is probably minimal, and there is not so much on the techniques proper of building a garden or maintaining it. But the photos are taken with perfect lighting and from an "ideal perspective" which elucidate (we may imagine) the intention of the garden's creator -- i.e. "that perfect moment" of beholding such splendor. The book is a must for anyone interested in the topic of Zen, Gardening, and Kyoto!
