On a small, protected mountain ridge in the middle of suburban Pretoria, Goldi the Golden Mole and her family fight for survival. Their species is almost extinct, and now a housing development project threatens their very existence.Goldi and his best friend Zaza, the cat, think of a challenging and dangerous plan to avert this disaster and save the Golden Moles. Will they be successful?About The StoryThe story of Zaza and the Golden Mole is based on true events; the cat Zaza did bring home the first golden mole seen in many years on the day before the crucial meeting on the planned development project. The interaction between Zaza and the golden mole originated in the imagination. The author is Zaza's human mom.About Golden MolesThe Juliana's golden-mole (Neamblysomus julianae) are on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) red list of threatened species. They belong to an ancient group of mammals known as the Afrotheria. Recent genetic evidence suggests that they might be related to elephants, hyraxes, and sea cows (amongst others), rather than to moles. The Juliana's golden moles live in only three places in South Africa. Two of these locations are state-owned nature conservation areas. The third place, the Bronberg mountain range in the east of Pretoria, is part of a Green Belt protected area which is privately owned, but where strict development regulations are in place.
