For the independent traveler there is no better guide

J.A. Cuddon is a very good writer. This book is a pleasure to read even when you aren't yet sure you intend to visit the region you are studying. The book is comprehensive as well. Cuddon offers a rich hisorical and cultural tapestry of every major region, city and hundreds of the villages that dot the land between. If you are traveling on your own (that is, not in a tour group) you will want something like this to help you choose your path. You may need to back it up with internet research of post-1980s conditions, but this is definitely the place to start, and the only book you will need to carry.
