This book written in 1955 is a bit confusing. Sydney Dayne was training to be a nurse, after the death of her mother, she took over the household duties. When she couldn't leave her family, the man she was engaged to Hugh Lulworth told her she had to choose between her family and him. Sydney couldn't abandon her family so Hugh called off the marriage. A few months later Mr Dayne married a wonderful woman who was a perfect mother for her younger siblings, and Sydney was able to go on with her own life, but too late for Hugh and her. Now she works at Fernhurst as a Matron to Park House. And the new head of the school just happens to be Hugh, he beings his fiancee Marcia Downing. Marcia introduced Sydney to Hugh, and now she is about to marry him. When Marcia finds Sydney at the same school as Hugh she tells Sydney to leave, but Sydney already talked it over with Hugh and he asked her to stay. This ticks off Marcia. Then Sydney meets Lucas Manning a famous actor of stage and screen. He convinces Sydney that there is still a chance for her with Hugh, but at the same time Lucas wants Sydney for himself. He can't believe she treats him like a big brother, when he would give anything for her love. Lucas is the guardian of his dead brother's two little boys, Alistair and Edward. Sydney finds the children's mother Anne Carstairs is the sister of one of their head boys at Fernhurst. That's when Lucas puts his foot down, he doesn't want Anne to have access to his nephews, but somehow they end up on the same trip to London, and the Carstairs boys their mother, his sister is alive. The boys end up meeting their mother at the school as arranged by Hugh, but neither boy wants her as their mother, in fact Alistair insisted that Matron Dayne is his mother. From the back of the book: '"A quarrel is never final." Sydney wished that what her friend Lucas Manning said was true. She bitterly regretted the quarrel, which ended her engagement. But when her ex-fiance was appointed headmaster at the school where Sydney was matron, and brought a new fiancee with him, she knew everything was over between them. Heartbroken, Sydney turned to Lucas, the famous actor whose two young nephews were in her care. She soon became inextricable involved in Lucas's domestic problem-and in his life.'
