Book Overview

This fun, wacky presentation of unusual animals lets children fantasize about having a penguin, a beaver, even an elephant for a pet (A note on the copyright page cautions children not to expect to receive these animals as real pets.) Clever text and tongue-in-cheek illustrations show kids how to care for their far-fetched pet, while at the same time they learn real facts about these animals in a delightful, imaginative way.

NO WORSE FOR WEAR AFTER ALL THESE YEARS

Your Pet Bear was an addition to the Far-Fetched Pets series which have been around for quite a number of years now. The copy I am reviewing here is a hard back which was published by the Children's Press, Chicago in 1980. Needless to say, this particular book is now out of print which is a pity. Before I get into the book, I am pleased to state that the book does include a disclaimer which states that bears, along with the other animals in this series, should never be actually kept as pet and that that you should not ask for one for your birthday. The book its self, asks the young reader to imagine what it would be like to have a bear as a house pet. The simple text is well written and full of humor. This works actually, in a sneaky way, gives quite a lot of information about the American Black Bear, so the child is actually learning some very good facts while enjoying a very good read. Lines such as, "He could sleep with you, but he's a very messy roommate. Besides, it might make your teddy jealous," are typical of the humor inserted here and there. The art work is quite good, actually I hate to use the word "cute" but that is exactly what it is. The text goes perfectly with the illustrations, and as I said, the illustrations are quite good. This is a great read a long book and when read to a group, almost always brings out much discussion and speculation as to what a bear would be like as a pet and endless stories of their own pets from the kids. All in all, this is a delightful read. Don Blankenship The Ozarks
