An excellent reference book, which I have often used due to a variety of medical conditions with one or both eyes. The reason I have not given it a 5-star rating is that the material is becoming a bit dated. Since its publishing in 1995, huge advances have been made in the treatment of Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD), such as Visudyne photoreactive therapy in 2003, Macugen interocular injections in 2004, and within the last year, Lucentis. Would love to see an updated edition! Again, a very useful guide to your eyes.
Information on the proper care of eyesight during reading and computing is missing!

As much as 90% of the information you take in from the environment pass through your eyes. Therefore your eyesight plays a really vital role in your information processing. I find this book to be an indispensable guide in caring & maintaining your most precious faculty. The presentation format is straight talk, with do's & don'ts. It has been written from the veiwpoint of the opthalmologist, a medical doctor who has specialised training in optical, medical & surgial eye care. The major divisions of the book include: - What you need to know about your eyes; - Basic care & maintenance; - Detection of eye disease; - What you need to know about treatment; - A Practical Encyclopaedia of visual disorders; These major sections are cross-referenced, allowing readers to access further information & background material related to a topic of interest. My only complaint about this book is the obviously missing information on the proper care of eyesight during reading and while working on computers (There is just a perfunctory mention of computer-screen related eye strain). An added section on applied ergonomics in these areas would certainly be helpful & useful to readers in today's context. On the whole, & in conclusion, this guide has almost everything you need to know from basic care & maintenance to diagnostics & treatment of 100 eye problems.
