Paddy Crosbie's book is an enchanting account of what life was like in the Dublin before Ireland became cosmopolitan. At the time Paddy Crosbie grew up Ireland was still finding it's feet as a free nation, and Dublin was struggling to become a proper European capital. As a Dubliner I can say we take it all for granted now. But this book really makes you realize how much Dublin has changed. It describes events like the War of Independence and the Civil War from the point of view of the children who grew up in their shadow. But best of all, despite all this the book is witty, charming, touching and very well written. A great book about a time and a place that will never come again.
