that woman from dallas or fort worth or wherever who said a hysterectomy was the best thing for her should wait awhile. I'm sure after she suffers a stroke, a heart attack, high cholestrol, etc. she'll realize it wasn't the best thing for her. What might have been easily cured with natural herbs, better nutrition, or even yoga, was cured by removing vital organs from her body. This book clearly informs the reader about options that many gynocologists simply don't know about or don't care about. A woman who is recommended a hysterectomy is often given that choice because the doctor sees dollar signs, not relief or accurate help for the woman. This book exposes that 'secret' that every woman should be aware of. Although no man can give a woman an accurate picture of what will happen after a hysterectomy, Strausz does an excellent job of detailing exactly why you should not get a hysterectomy.I speak from experience. I was lied to about having 'ovarian cancer' when in fact I had a large fibroid. I was given a complete hysterectomy and am now suffering the consequences. Many women fail to relate their long term medical problems of heart disease, depression, dental problems, stroke, high cholestrol, etc. to having a hysterectomy. But I'm living proof. I was in great physical and emotional health before the hysterectomy. Now I suffer from bone pain, tingling in my hands, nerve damage in my leg, high cholestrol (without changing a no-dairy/veggie diet), and high blood pressure, even though I exercise every day and am not overweight. Hysterctomies kill - slowly. Just because it might relieve painful periods is not a reason to get one. Just because a doctor tries to scare you with 'cancer' you should get a second, third and fourth opinion. And then you should read this book.
I'm a bit shocked

at the reaction of the Arlington, Texas reader who went out of her way to attack this book because she believes hystectomies benefit women. Her own experience may have been positive, but why would she want to deprive the other million-plus American women who are advised to have a hysterectomy each year--a proportion greater than in virtually any other country in the world--of the chance to make an informed decision, based on full knowledge of the options? Thank God, there are new options today; as well as a growing sense of responsibility among doctors to avoid unnecessary surgeries that for some may prove emotionally and physically damaging. The new edition (April 2001) of this book offers an excellent overview of the new treatments, as well as the latest thinking about their risks and benefits. But more importantly, this book is evenhanded--never pushing the reader but rather simply laying out the pros and cons of hysterectomy (and oophrectomy, another tough question) in a warmly accessible way, so that she can draw her own conclusions. It is an uplifting, wise, and comprehensive guide that can help any woman make the treatment decision that is right for her. Every gynecologist should have a copy of this book on display in the waiting room!
