Fabulous

This 125 page book is presumably aimed at young middle school readers, but in truth it is equally as instructive for adults. The volume is filled with ethical puzzles and dilemmas, many based on real life situations, and many problems that we have all confronted. In the opening scenario, a Rabbi is home one evening when an armed man breaks in, and points a gun at his head, demanding that he eat pork or forfeit his life. You be the judge-- that is, what would you do? Each example is presented, and readers are then asked to consider their response. Only then, on the following page, does Rabbi Nachum Ansel note the factors important in making a decision, and the approach to be taken, based on Jewish texts. In the case of the Rabbi, for example, while pork is not Kosher, and Rabbis generally keep the laws of Kasruth, the Jewish sages teach that life is most important. Each problem is followed by references to Jewish teachings, and a brief description of the reasoning behind each. Students here will also find a question on whether it is okay to wear fur, whether or not the animal is killed humanely, without pain. The number and variety of problems presented is quite impressive, and the answers are equally wonderful.
