Jason Perry became an adult while with the very popular Christian boy band Plus One (he left the group at the end of 2002). Once you read this book, you will realize that he also grew up spiritually as well.Think of "You Are Not Your Own: Living Loud For God" as an autobiography of Jason's walk with the Lord. Although it is a very short book (only 127 pages), Jason has bared his soul to us completely. He not only shares the good, but the bad as well. Many people, especially those who grew up in the church, should be able to relate to Jason.God has worked wonders in Jason's heart, which will become very obvious to you as you read the book. Though written for an audience his age and younger, even those like me who are (much) older will be touched by Jason's openness and honesty.Thank you, Jason, for listening to the Lord and sharing with us. I have been truly blessed by it.

This book is a true blessing. I purchased this for my soon to be 15 year old who is obviously a PlusOne fan. But, I went one step further and read it with her. I would encourage other parents to do the same. It was such a blessing to read about his feelings on a few topics. Some of those happen to be a few that we have already taken a stand against. As parents we know that sometimes it takes someone else to say what we have been saying for it to have any meaning. He stresses accountability and your relationship with the Lord. He talks about how the things you choose to see, hear, or participate in will hinder your walk with the Lord. Then he goes one step further and provides you with scripture to back it up. I highly recommend this to any parent that desires to supply their children with the necessary tools to help them make those right choices.
How could I choose less than 5 stars?

Let me admit it right off, I'm a fifteen year old girl who's a Plus ONE fan and Jason is probably my favorite member. Does it surprise you that I'm interested in this book? When I first started reading it, I noticed right away that Jason had help, and some techniques of a more experienced author stood out against words that I knew were his. He said himself: "I don't even like to read, how can I write a book?" So why did he write a book? It wasn't because he had a passion for writing or wanted to create a #1 best selling huge moneymaker. He wrote it anyway because he had something to say and he knew God wanted him to say it. I'm sure a lot of girls picked up the book because they liked the guy on the cover. But as they read I'm sure they found out this isn't about Jason Perry, it's about God and what He's done in J's life. I found it very inspiring. If Jason could live his life like he was totally in love with God, why couldn't I? It struck me that my parents would like this book. He said some of the exact same things they've been having a difficult time trying to convince me of, but as soon as I heard it from him, I immediately accepted it. It's nice to hear Godly advice from someone who's older, more mature and experienced, but who is close enough to our age to still deal with the same issues we are. As I read on, I found out that Jason has some great thoughts on the benefits of purity, the fulfillment caused by giving everything to God, the value of Bible memory, making good choices about what kind of music to listen to, and what kind of friends to hang out with, and how to act towards the Plus ONE guys if you ever meet them. What I've learned from Jason has greatly affected some of my decisions; few people that I've never met have influenced me so much. If you're a teen and you want a book that will help you deepen your relationship with God, here you go, and if you're already a Jason appreciator it will feel like you're getting council from a good friend. Now, what don't I like about this book? Can I find something, or am I too biased as a fan to admit that even the Plus-Oners can make mistakes? Let me think, Jason does his job by including info about what it's like to be in the band, he includes lots of Bible verses, the content and sincerity are admirable and he doesn't make his story too long or boring. Maybe I would complain that his face being on the cover is to self-promoting, but that's how people recognize him anyway. Don't all previously famous book writers do that? Finale verdict: No complaints, only compliments, to the author of "You are not Your Own."

Jason Perry's book was the best Christian inspiration book I have ever read. I picked up this book and couldn't put it down until I was done! Jason tells his inspiring story while talking about the importance of mentors, prayer, reading and memorizing Scripture, and much more. His writing style is very candid and open which really appealled to me. Although Jason left himself very open to media criticism with his vulnerability, I was very inspired by his story and it totally changed and inspired my spiritual life. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know God in a deeper way. Thank you, Jason, for this great book!
