Set in France in the year 1526 during the reign of King Francois I. Aimee, while relaxing in the forest meets two strangers hunting a stag in the same forest. Unknown to her one is King Francois I, her King, whom she unknowingly insults at the hilarity of the Kings friend and comrade, Thomas St Briac. Thomas and Aimee feel an attraction for each other and thinking she is a peasant girl because of the way that she is dressed, thomas decides to engage in a quick encounter with her but when St Briac realizes Aimee is an innocent, he lets her go home, while he and the King ride off, thinking they will never see her again. Which the King is very glad of because of the girls insults about her King. When Aimee gets home she finds that her parents have arranged a marriage for her to a man older than her own father. She and her family go to a ball to be introduced to the King. There Aimee and her family realize that she has insulted the King himself. St Briac to the rescue keeps her from the site of the King. So without Aimee her parents and her sister Honorine meet the King. Honorine makes a romantic impression on the King. After the Ball the King sends a messenger for Honorine to join his court train to Court so he can engage in an affair with her. Aimee wanting to escape her arranged marriage, intercepts the message for Honorine, letting the messanger think that she is the sister the King has asked for. So she packs up and sneaks out to join the kings court train before her family is awake the following morning. Her maid Suzette (15 years old) see's her and joins her, not wanting her mistress to go alone and to join her own true love in the process. So they make the trip in one of the Kings coaches hiding from the king, until they are caught by none other than, Thomas St Briac himself. Aimee begs him not to give her away to the King. He agrees to help try keeping her out of site of the king until they reach their destination. At the end of their first destination, the King does finally find out that he has ended up with the insulting sister instead of the sweet one, he is at first enraged and then decides that Aimee is indeed pretty and he will bed her instead. When the King comes to her room to indeed bed Aimee, Thomas comes to her rescue again by telling the king that Aimee is his betrothed. Aimee and Thomas while betrothed fight the love that they feel. Aimee realizes her love for Thomas much sooner that Thomas realizes his for her. He also has a mistress that he spends too much time with during the book. Aimee and Thomas do marry eventually towards the end. There is also intrigue during the book, too long for me to go into here, and Aimee is a big help to Thomas with that. Aimee and her sister Honerine dress as lads and then Aimee again as a strumpet, to help Thomas save a friend from the hangman at the end. The only thing I did not like about this book... was that Thomas took too long in realizing even to himself that he loved Aimee and he
Richly Romantic Medieval Love Story
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 20 years ago
After making a name for herself with a brilliant series of American Colonial love stories, Seventies romance giant Cynthia Wright turned to Medieval France for inspiration. With her striking black hair and green eyes, Aimee de Fleurance was a magnet for unsuitable suitors. Yet when she ran away from home disguised as a page boy, she soon met the most irresistable and absolutely unsuitable suitor of all! Set in France in the 1500's, this book contains all of Cynthia Wright's trademarks. The heroine is girlish, strong willed, innocent and feisty yet deeply passionate and somewhat impulsive. The hero is older, dark, knowing, wise, seemingly cynical but deeply protective once he falls for the perky heroine. The setting is filled in with incredible charm, the lush beauty of France and the joys of French food and wine seeming to jump right out from every page. Don't miss this delicious love story of Aimee and her gallant lover!
