Book Overview

"Charming and funny . . . Mesmerizing . . . Wonderful." --USA Today Yolanda Garc a--Yo, for short--is the literary one in the family. Her first published novel, in which uses as characters practically everyone she knows, was a big success. Now she's basking in the spotlight while those "characters" find their very recognizable selves dangling in that same blinding light. But turnabout is fair play, and so here, Yolanda Garc a's family and friends tell the truth about Yo. Her three sisters, her Mami and Papi, her grandparents, t as, t os, cousins, housemaids, her third husband: they take turns telling their side of the story, ripping into Yo and in the process creating their own endearing self-portraits. At once funny and poignant, intellectual and gossipy, lighthearted and layered, Yo is above all a portrait of the artist. And with its bright colors, passion, and penchant for controversy, it's a portrait that could come only from the palette of Julia Alvarez. Don't miss Alvarez's new novel, The Cemetery of Untold Stories, available now This description may be from another edition of this product.

Great Book!!!!

!Yo! by Julia Alvarez is a great book to read. I thought it was easy to follow because of the good sequence it had. Its characters were very diversified and were all connected through Yolanda Garcia, the main character of the book. This book will definitely make you want to read more of Alvarez' books. I also read In the time of Butterflies by the same author and I was equally excited when I finished reading it. I would definitely...

Great work

I enjoyed Yo! more than I did How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accent. Julia Alvarez does such a great job of developing each point of view on Yolanda Garcia, that by the end of the novel you feel as if you personally know this character. She brings to life her central character through the stories of those who were a part of her life and she does this so skilfully, with each character given its own writing style and voice,...

This book was AWESOME!

wow! I remember being blown away by "How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accent". Even then, Yolanda was my favorite character. It was easy to get right into this book-it was fast-reading, interesting, and definitely worthwhile. Being a resident of Vermont myself, I am amazed with Julia Alvarez' amazing writing talent. And although she is not nationally well-known, she is a name commonly heard around here. Yo! was a truly...

The Garcia Girls are back with a vengeance!!

This was such a wonderful read! It felt like a coming home! All the distinct characters have an opinion about Yolanda Garcia. "Yo" has written a book whose characters bare way too much resemblance to her family members and everyone is in an uproar. "Yo" seems unaffected by it all. Julia Alvarez has the ability to take you in to her story with a warmth that has the scent of the "sancocho" your Mami made on Saturdays...

A great Read!

Julia Alvarez' writing is characterized by her impeccable ability to create convincing characters whose travails and disappointments, joys and triumphs, the reader inevitably experiences as though he were an integral part of the book. In this, the sequel to How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, Alvarez once again has taken us in a wild ride that reverberates with the sound of truth. Amazingly, we re-acquaint ourselves with...
