A bit of old hat, but filled with wise insights...

1. Is this an in depth presentation? I can change the shape of my world is a book about human existence in today's world and as such has quite a large scope, but at a shallow depth. This is a good introduction to issues facing contemporary man and well suited as material for first year studies in counselling. 2. To what extent does the author address current situations? The book is primarily concerned with modern man in contemporary society. The following serves as examples from the book: -- The profile sketch of present day man in Chapter 2. -- 20th century psychological models of man compared to the biblical model of man in Chapter 3. Throughout the book, the author also relates his subject matter to situations that most readers would find familiar. He does this so that the reader would be able to relate to the material. Dr Kent wants his readers to realise that faith in God is not an outmoded way of thinking, but is the ONLY way of thinking for a successful life. 3. Was there any new information? Most of what I read in the book served as a refresher of things I had already known. It could almost be said that a lot of the material is common sense and therefore should not even BE in the book. And in this we find the point the author is trying to make: God's laws, statutes and precepts are not unreasonable, but reasonable and that they make a lot of common sense! Two sections that I want to mention in terms of new information is Section 2.2.1 and Chapter 8. Chapter 8. It was worth reading this book for this Chapter alone. What amazing insights Dr Kent puts forth as he contrasts the world's way of operating (seeing is believing) with the Godly or Christian way (If you believe, you will see). I want to memorise this chapter! Chapter 2.2.1 (on moral laws). Dr Kent discusses the Ten Commandments and how breaking them affects society. I found this discussion food for thought. 4. Do you agree with the way the author interprets scripture? A resounding yes! Dr Kent knows what he wants to say and he knows why he is saying it. He bases everything that he says on the Word of God. He takes scripture at face value and relates it to modern life. He stands unafraid in the face of moral relativism (that would question certain radical biblical statements) because he believes in the power of God and the power of the Cross. This book demonstrates the mind of someone with great wisdom. His ideas are well thought through, tried, tested and well presented. 5. What impact did the book have on me? It strengthened me in two ways. First, it encouraged me to take responsibility for my life. I'm the one that God wants to use to change my life. It also encouraged me by reiterating the power of the Cross. Jesus saves lives. Jesus changes lives. Faith in God through the sacrifice of His Son; that can change my life. With Christ in me, I can change the shape of my world.
