I found this book well written and compelling to read. You can feel the tension and desperation of daily life, caught between the warring factions of two armies. It is the story of Carrie and Micah. Carrie is the widow of a Union soldier who has come to the Kansas/Missouri border area with her young son. She had no home after her husband's death, until a cousin took her in. Her cousin, Micah's stepmother, left her the farm. Micah is a soldier in the Confederate irregular Army who has just escaped from a Union prison. He is wounded in the escape and his horse brings him to the farm. Carrie nurses him back to health, despite the severe penalties for aiding the enemy. Carrie is uncertain of her legal claim on the land and has the local preacher marry her to an unconscious Micah. The rest of the story deals with their entanglement, his growing attraction to her and her son, his desire to return to fighting for the Confederacy and their subsequent decisions.
