Gary Chalk's Yankee Doodle

Gary Chalk is generally known for illustrating Fantasy and Science Fiction books and Magazines. It is obvious that Mr. Chalk has performed an admirable amount of research for this book; the uniforms represented are as accurate as many serious refernce books; this is even more amazing since this is primarily a children's book and the target audience would likely be unaware of the work that has been put into it. The character's are whimsical, many of them have pop-guns and their bayonets have safety-corks on the points. Included are the traditional lyrics. New Lyrics and historical facts abound throughout the book. Great for young and old alike!!!!

I agree with the first poster

Excellent book! They even mention the right to bear arms which is seldom taught in the schools now a day, which was the primary reason for the Boston Tea Party!

THIS YANKEE DOODLE'S A DANDY !

Put a feather in your cap and run to he store for a copy of this irresistible look at American history through the eyes of a patriotic mouse named Yankee Doodle. Following an introduction explaining that the tune "Yankee Doodle" was sung by the British to make fun of the Yankees and an interpretation of the use of the rather puzzling "Macaroni," the music and lyrics for 6 verses of the song are presented. Then we're off on a captivating lesson penned in charming rhyme and accompanied by historical information - "She was known as Molly Pitcher because she carried pitchers of water to the soldiers through the heat of the day." Gary Chalk's colorful comical illustrations are priceless, with armies of animals serving as soldiers. His attention to artistic detail is peerless. Although suggested for children, this is a whimsical story that will be enjoyed by all ages. Gary Chalk's "Yankee Doodle" is surely a dandy! - Gail Cooke
