A text aimed at those with current or planned involvement in the management of X.400, including messaging managers, system or network planners and software developers. This book provides background... This description may be from another edition of this product.
My interest in buying this book was to get a better understanding of Internet email systems. X.400 is obsolete if it ever lived at all. What amazed me is how the development of X.400 and SMTP went hand in hand. Or put another way how SMTP and the other mail protocols are modeled on X.400.This book gave me a greater appreciation for the work that went into designing today's email systems. Anyone who wants to consider themselves an email expert needs to understand the heritage to fully understand why email is the way it is.

Like other review says, this book is very much theory. For practise you must read the new book from john rhoton.

Gives a good overview of how X.400 and SMTP tackle the same problem but offer different solutions. Helpful for anyone who wants to understand these protocols.
