Excellent book - well worth the money spent

I bought this book to get up and running in Visual Basic 2005 and was not disappointed. The book is well-written by a knowledgable and thoughtful author and is extensive in what it covers. The code and all examples work as stated and I learned a great deal from reading through each chapter and performing the Try It Out exercises. I plan on going through the book again to refresh the many concepts that I learned.

I Like His Approach and His Writing Style

Unlike a lot of books that jump right into programming, the firs thing that I liked about this book was that it took just a few pages to explain where VB came from, why it's a suitable language for a beginner, and so on. After that, it takes the CD included with the book and uses it to load the software you will be using. That way, first, you're not stumbling around the Microsoft web site looking for what you should download, and second, you're working with the same edition of everything that he is using in the illustrations so you're not always making allowances for having something different on your screet. After that I liked his approach of starting with a simple program (Hello World, what else?) so that you have something running almost immediately. From there you increase your program one step at at a time until you are working with the complete language. Is the best of all books on VB? I don't know, I haven't read them all. But this is a good one, I happened to like his writing style and the way he presented what I wanted to know. There were a couple of typos I spotted, but they were easy to see as typos and caused me no problems.

Another Quality Wrox Product

This was definitely a good reference tool for my university studies last semester. It really helped with drilling home a number of VB fundamentals that many other books don't seem to really get the hang of. The method in which this book is setout and detailed makes it really easy to become very interested in how to better your own abilities at coding in VB. Given that it is only a starter kit, its definitely got the goods for making what could easily become a nauseating subject very interesting. I'll definitely be recommending this book to other friends who are also looking at taking the same uni subjects as I have next year.

Finally Understand Programming

After trying a few different books, I found this to be a very comprehensive and easy to understand, unlike some others. It took me step by step through the project and allowed me to create something that actually works and allowed me to understand what I was actually doing. If your just starting out in programming, I'd recommend you give this book a try. You won't regret it.

The Ultimate Guide for a Beginner

Stepping into the world of programming was like entering a scary new land filled with inhabitants speaking a language I couldn't understand. It was daunting! This wasn't helped by the fact that the other book i purchased was about as helpful was a map of middle earth in elvish. Wrox's Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition Starter Kit however, held my hand through the whole process of getting acquainted with programming. I certainly don't feel like a pro yet, but this book has helped me to bridge that vital gap and take the first step towards becoming a programming pro! I now feel comfortable with basic programming concepts such as XML parsing, whereas before this book i had no clue! Highly recommended - if you're a beginner, this is the book for you!
