When bad things happen to good people

This is the twentith entry in the DS9 series of novels. As the story opens as Varis Sul, the young Bajoran village leader is dealing with the black market to obtain a replicator and the necessary raw materials to supply food for her starving village. She manages to complete the transaction but is concerned about the cost. She was thinking about the cost in a moral sense but she was soon to realize that the costs would be calculated in much more concrete terms. The ill-gotten replicator had unleased a plague that would soon spread to all of Bajor. The secondary plot line concerns the O'Briens. Chief Engineer Miles O'Brien is still struggling to keep DS9 running while trying to adapt the Cardassian built station to the largely incompatiable Federation technology. His wife, Keiko has just returned from an expedition to Bajor where she was working on a project that would allow her to use her expertise as a botanist. The separation had been hard for Miles but he understood that Keiko had been less than fulfilled by her on station occupation of running a school for the station's children. He was not pleased to discover that she planned to return to the planet for another assignment. As the plague continues to spread across Bajor Ro Laren (TNG), contacts Sisko with an offer to help track down the source of the contagian. Despite, or perhaps because of, their similiarities Kira Nerys and Ro Laren manage to throughly irritate each other. Circumstances force them to find a way to work together, a situation shared by Sisko and Quark. This is a reasonably good entry into the series, most of the regular characters make at least an appearance and are handled well. Kai Winn is also present, as villanous as always and we are even treated to visits by Varis Sul and Ro Laren. The plot, although predictable and with a few flaws, is interesting. Fans of the series (and who else would be reading this?) will find this an enjoyable way to catch up with old friends and will undoubtedly pick up on the subtle darker theme that is implied.

DS9 #20 Wrath of the Prophets - A true page turner!

Over the years in Star Trek novels there have been several novels that were written by multiple top Star Trek authors that either worked very well or fell flat in the dialogue and overall story, "Wrath of the Prophets" can definitely be counted among the ones that worked extremely well. Of course, given the authors of this novel in Peter David, Michael Jan Friedman and Robert Greenberger, this novel should have and does work well in bringing the characters and story alive, given the feeling of a well made show.One of the better things about having read so many Star Trek novels by these great authors is that you can pretty much; with a fair amount of certainty tell which parts were written by which author. Overall, the plot setup and execution is done extremely well, the pacing of the novel is phenomenal and the characterizations are done extremely well, especially the "first time" pairing of Major Kira Nerys and former Starfleet officer Ro Laren.The cover art for this novel, while still coveting the image of two major characters, is a pretty good one and much better than the majority of the novels that were published at the same time as this one.The Premise:A fatal disease starts ravaging Bajor and eventually spreads to Deep Space Nine itself. Captain Sisko finds that he must turn to former Starfleet officer, Ro Laren in order to find the source of the alien plague. What follows from there is an extraordinarily well written novel that involves the better part of the crew to solve to mystery as Dr. Bashir struggles to find the cure and somewhere in Dax's past one of her previous hosts has run into this virus. The dialogue between Kira and Ro in this novel is utterly phenomenal and completely believable as to what it might've been had they met on screen.Overall, I highly recommend this Star Trek Deep Space Nine novel to any and all fans of Star Trek fiction as it is a highly imaginative and wonderfully intriguing story. {ssintrepid}

Decent

The Ro-Kira interaction was enjoyable. Same goes for the Sisko-Quark scenes. The story was just interesting enough to keep reading, but it was only mildly entertaining. It was informative on the Bajoran provisional government. It included alien species that we've encountered on previous missions.

Wrath of the prophets - one of DS9's best!

This book, in my opinion is probably THE best Deep Space Nine novel, ever written. It was written in tandem with three of trek's finest writers, and the story is just great! It is set immediatly after Sisko earns his rank of captain - so Worf isn't in it - that's the only downpoint
