Dated but not outdated

One thing that has always added strength to the LEGO system is its near perfect backward compatibility. 'The World of LEGO Toys' carries some of this compatibility in that it is clearly written at a certain point of time (late 1980's) and yet much of the information is relevant today. It's a concise and colorful look at the company, its products and their affect of kids of all ages. It looks at the early days of integrating computers and LEGO bricks; offering a nice background for today's much more advance Mindstorms models. The book even touches on the subject of adults building with LEGO which is something that wouldn't really come of age for another decade, when the internet brought together older fans from around the world. While the book is sometimes a bit too focused on the educational aspects of the LEGO system it is none-the-less a well-written and obviously well-researched work. It stands up today despite the many advances of the products and the little company that makes them. The full color pictures are a delight to look at and represent LEGO bricks in a wide variety of models. There are also a number of 'behind the scenes' photos that give you some sense of how LEGO products are made. I would highly recommend this text to anyone interested in the history of LEGO and how it has brought the system to where it is today.

the best book ever

I checked this book out from my public library. It is one of the best written books I've ever read

A great book of LEGO history.

I purchased this book a few years back mainly for the great illustrations of LEGO creations. But recently, I was taking a speech class and decided to do a speech on LEGO history, (because I like to be the odd-ball) and this book came in really handy. In fact, I didn't need any other sources of LEGO information other than what was contained in this book. The book takes the reader back to the very early days of the LEGO company, back when it produced wooden toys and follows the company into the late 80's. The book also discusses, in great detail, the Lego company's philosophy all of which I found very interesting. If you're into LEGO nostalgia, and want to see some great pictures of LEGO's and the Legoland Theme Park, I highly recommend this book.
