An excellent supplement to most courses of study

Freundlich's "Workbook in Latin" series is an excellent compilation of supplementary exercises for students learning Latin with other textbook series. Each unit reminds the students of general rules for each topic, e.g., a chart of third declension endings, and follows with several exercises with vocabulary presented in that unit. Exercises may be multiple choice, Engligh-to-Latin, Latin-to-English, matching, or fill-ins, offering the instructor a great variety of transformations on the topic to hold students' interest. Though the vocabulary is a bit off-key with most contemporary textbooks (Ecce Romani, Cambridge Latin Course, Latin is Fun, Wheelock's), it aligns well with get-ready-to-read-Caesar programs like Jenney's and the outstanding Latin: An Intensive Course. A comprehensive glossary at the back of the book assists students with unfamiliar vocabulary, so this is only a slight concern. Unit X contains "Passages for Comprehension," which I have found to be a great help for students preparing for the National Latin Exam. Units XI and XII on Derivation/Word Study and Roman Civilization and Culture are excellent and accurate supplements to classroom teaching and independent study. I have used this workbook for several years to assist students with the "analytic" side of Latin language learning -- endings, conjugations, pronouns, and morphology generally. It is the best resource for trouble-shooting these areas; after 15 minutes' work with the rules and exercises, students feel confident when they see that they have just completed, say, 75 examples on a topic which befuddled them until that drill. Units are self-contained, and so instructors may procede from whichever order suits their curriculum without being bound to the order of the workbook. Units: I. Verbs -- Active Voice II. Verbs -- Passive Voice III. Principal parts of verbs; infinitives; participles IV. Nouns V. Adjectives, Numerals, and Adverbs VI. Pronouns VII. Prepositions VIII. Idioms IX. Grammar X. Passages for Comprehension XI. Derivation and Word Study XII. Roman Civilization and Culture XIII. Latin Words and Expressions for Oral Classroom Use XIV. Vocabulary/Glossary XV. Model Examinations
