Fun poetry writing

This book was recommended to me at a workshop, but I was under the impression it had blackline masters. It does not. However it still has great value for teaching kids (ages 5-10) poetry using similes, metaphors, personification, imagery, etc. I made my own worksheets and the children love when we do activities from this book. The author includes examples from children who are 5-7 years old and they are wonderful. These examples make my 2nd graders think, if a 5 year old can write that, I bet I can too if not something better. I also saw an increase in writing scores because these lessons constantly have the children adding detail by answering when, where, what kind, and so on. My students know good writing always needs this kind of elaboration. The book is worth the investment but know you'll have to make your own worksheets or have the students draft in a blank journal. If you decide to make the purchase, use the book and don't just forget about it in your cabinet. Happy writing!
