Lionel Grigson was my very good friend for nearly twenty years before his death in 1994. Lionel is mainly remembered for his passion for jazz and for sharing his prodigious knowledge of the subject with everyone he met. Visiting the master in his native habitat was always an adventure. After squeezing yourself into the world's smallest and slowest lift, Lionel would greet you at the open door of his tiny Putney flat and usher you into the wonders of his world. You never knew what he had in store for you. It could be a reading from his famously unfinished Klangfarbian opera, a music theory test, or a scholarly argument (delivered in all seriousness) that jazz was invented by the Greeks. On one occasion, I noticed a copy of Wonders of the World on his coffee table and idly began leafing through it. I love travel books. As I had recently been travelling in the American West, the glowing descriptions of the Grand Canyon and other North American locations caught my eye. Not til I put it down did I realise that I was in the presence of the esteemed author, who I knew had never set foot in the USA. Under cross examination, Lionel admitted that he'd never been to any of the exotic places featured in "Wonders of the World". In fact, Lionel's travel research consisted entirely of riding a London bus to the Fulham public library each day for a couple months. We had a laugh. Wonders of the World is still my favorite travel book.
