Excellent Book!

This is a very interesting, informative and well-written historical novel. It captures the feeling and emotions of pioneering in the old west. Based on a true family history, Chown engages the reader with an exploration of what it must have been really like to go through the hardships that so many experienced in settling the West. The book reminded me of that great epic, "How the West was Won". "Wolves at the Door" held my attention throughout. I highly recommend it.

FANTASTIC!!!!!!

Wolves At The Door is more than just a snapshot of American history and western expansion. It is the story of the Devin Family. It is a story that exemplifies the importance and value of family. It is also a love story. I felt as though I was riding along side of the Devin family watching them experience all of the highs and lows that we all experience in life. It reminded me that no matter where or when we are born, we all will face extreme hardship and euphoria. When Tamsen and Henry Devin experience tragety relating to one of their children, I found myself fighting back the tears and thinking about my own children and the universal love a parent has for a child. However, do not fear The author, Thomas Chown, also provides many laughs along the ride. This story is a journey that my wife and I both enjoyed!! I highly recommend you take the ride as well.

Get comfortable, this is a great read!

I enjoyed meeting the Devon clan. The author's sense of the historic period and his humorous writing style coupled to create a world easily entered and hard to leave . His writing reminds me a bit of James Thurber. Many of the incidents, based on true, family stories, are brought to life with colorful, of the era dialogue. I found that aspect of the book the most entertaining. I can't wait for the next installment to see how the family develops and changes. A great read. I highly recommend it! Linda H.

A Very Enjoyable Read

Do not get thrown off by the title- it is not strictly a man's book. I am a woman, and I thoroughly enjoyed the story of the Devons, a pioneer family in the 1800's, and the adventures and hardships they faced as they crossed Kansas, and then into Colorado. I also enjoyed the humor that is liberally sprinkled throughout the book. The author reveals that the characters in the story are actually based on his ancestors, and I took pleasure in reading that he was actually in possession of the butter mold box in the book (you'll just have to read the book to find out about it). You can read an overview of the book above. I will only add that in my opinion the author simply knows how to tell a story very well, and I found the book an extremely enjoyable and easy read. I highly recommend it.

Very Entertaining

I enjoyed this frontier story about the day to day happenings of a family's journey across this great land of ours. The author brings these characters to life. It's extremely well written and captivating. What's interesting is that the accurate historical accountings blend magnificently with the story telling. It keeps both the history buffs and readers who just love a good yarn extremely entertained and adds just the right touch of humor for good measure.
