How to succeeed as a do it yourself spy

This story takes place in the late spring and summer of 1939, ending roughly in Mid September. It begins with the disgrace of a tank officer because his designs of the England's main battle tank have gone missing, with the implication that the Germans have got them. The star of the court martial was a friend of his, who subsequently vanishes. While our officer is ruminating on the end of his life, an enterprising burgler tries to steal the contents of his safe. After capturing the burgler our officer starts on the process of bringing his old 'friend' to justice. This is a very funny romp through a very unfunny time. The officer and his burgler assistant keep finding little nests of spies and turning them over to British Intelence (In the person of Tommy Hambledon, lately returnd from Germany) who are most greatful, but want to know why and how this is being done. This book is a bit of a museum peice and a bit of a historical resource. It is informative of the attitudes and knowlege of an olden time.
