Book Overview

George Burns once said, Why shouldn't I play God? At my age anything I do is a miracle. But miracles seem to come easily for George, who is America's most beloved nonagenarian author. Here he delivers wit, charm and sage advice with laughter and the puff of a cigar. Photographs throughout.

Burns' deadpan style of humor does not come off as well in print

One of the best aspects of the comedy material of George Burns was that is was presented in such a deadpan manner. His best lines were delivered with no great buildup and with a minimum of props. In many cases, with the exception of the cigar, he was the comedian, the scenery and all the props combined. In this book, he sets down some of that humor and while it is funny, it in no way approaches the impact that it would have had if Burns had delivered it in person. It is a combination of ten short vignettes interspersed with interludes that are lists of short jokes. Throughout the book, he dispenses advice with a hint of sage, but most of the time he is making one of his understated jokes. If you are a fan of George Burns and have seen him perform, then you will enjoy the book. However, if you have never seen him deliver his own particular brand of comedy, then it is quite likely you will wonder how this man has been in show business for ninety years.
