It is very good to highlight Winsock differences with BSD socket API

Windows sockets are not like BSD sockets. The book explains very well the different specific modes into which winsock can be used: Blocking mode in a dedicated thread, asynchronous mode using Windows messages and Overlapped I/O that removes some memory copying when passing buffer to send/receive data from/to sockets. It also covers the Socket classes provided with MFC. In my opinion, this book covers very well the details specific to Windows version of the socket API and that will allow the readers to take advantage of this socket API version.

Great book for Winsock Programming

If you are looking for a definitive guide to writing Winsock applications in Windows, this is it! The author doesn't waste a lot of time on trivail stuff, he just dives right in and teaches you what you really need to know.If you're a C++ programmer, he's got some great classes that can get your existing projects off the ground, but where the book really shines is in discussing the low-level nitty-gritty stuff on how it all works. My only complaint is the lack of almost *any* discussion on Proxy servers. If you're writing an application for your own personal or company use, then this book has all you need. But if you're writing commercial software, the lack of information on proxies can cause problems down the road.

Excellent book about winsock, I highly recommend it.

The book begins with winsock 1.1 and then progresses to winsock 2.0. All of the programming examples work and are well-documented. The book was very understandable. The book does not assume you "know everything about winsock" as the first reviewer suggests. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about windows sockets/network programming.

Excellent book

Complete, up to date, easy to read. I've been programming with Winsock for a couple of years now and this book cleared up a LOT of gray areas for me.

Best programming book I've read to date.

Windsock 2.0 is the best programming book I've read to date. It thoroughly covered everything you would need, to programming Winsock applications. It is a great book not only learning how to program protocol independent Windows applications, it also is a great reference book. Unlike a lot of programming books I've read the code provided with the book actually works. The book was very well organized and pleasurable to read. This book as been key in my development and that of my colleagues of several network aware applications. My hat is off to Lewis Napper, for he did a truly great job with this book.
