a taste of paradise

How can a book have you inwardly smile in one paragraph, bring tears up in the next and have you laugh out loud at page end, wishing for more? Windcharm is a glimpse of the gentle reality of one man's realized dream to set up house and home outside the bustle of the big city. Unlike the charming tales from slightly pampered authors of the idyls of Provence or Tuscany this is the tale of a WWII vet, scrapping a living on his return from the war and committing all his resources in his later years to slowly building and living in Medonte Township, land of rolling hills and wild wooded valleys. It is this hard edged back drop that sets the scene for the reader's delight as the author opens up the realization of his dreams, values, adventures and insights. One soon grows to love the author and finds a growing need to visit Windcharm to see if this picaresque autobiography and its author actually exist. I have, and they do. The author's sketches of his friends, canine, feline and human transport the reader to rapturous moments, whether it is losing a kitten, or pondering the effects of rolling a live grenade into the hen house to deal with a potentially rabid intruder. Just as the reader gets settled into this gentle rocking chair yarn, the book reveals another past of the author: his long time work as a professional writer for some of Canada's major newspapers and a civil servant with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. By the end the reader is ready to get in car or board a plane find Windcharm if only to listen to some more 'deck memories' that didn't make it into this book. There are rumors of a second book. Anyone who has the delightful and engrossing experience of reading the first, will, like me be joining the line for the second installment of tales from Windcharm.
