William Andrew James Vines is possibly the only Confederate soldier killed and buried at Fort Stonewall in Clarke County, AL, even before it was completed or named. This work discusses the life of Vines, the Old Federal Road, Vines' military service, history of both Fort Stonewall and Fort Starr, the use of horses at Fort Stonewall, Brooke cannons, and the death of Vines.
