Jamie, a recovered cancer patient and UCLA coed, shares her apartment with a male student, but their platonic relationship is complicated by her family problems. This description may be from another edition of this product.
I read this book for the first time when I was around 14 (over ten years ago) and I have probably re-read it at least 10 times. Despite having already read it so many times, I picked it up one evening recently for a little light reading before bed and stayed up late into the night to finish it . . . again. Jamie's voice is very believable and engaging (the Pro and Con list she makes while trying to decide whether or not to let Kyle move in as her roommate is spot on), and her problems (recovery from cancer; volunteering at the cancer ward; pregnant older sister getting married; younger sister dating a no-good guy; finding her male roommate increasingly attractive) are interesting without being unrealistically or unnecessarily complicated. I really, really like it that her romantic attraction to someone is only one of many things going on in her life and is in no way presented as the most important part of Jamie's story. This is very much a slice of life book -- ending at a satisfying resolution point in the story arc without wrapping everything up too neatly. It is very easy to believe that Jamie, Kyle, Phoebe, Charm, and the rest of the characters are real people and that they will go on living their story after the book ends.
I love this book - and so have people who have borrowed it!

This is one of those books that I have to go back and re-read every now and then. The relationship between Kyle and Jamie is so sweet and everytime I read the scene where Jamie puts the gleaming necklace beside Donna Lyn's bed - I choke up. I've spent much time bemoaning the lack of Kyles in the world. =)Highly recommended!
