A Super Game

I read an article on Time Magazine and got interested. I always felt akward with the game of Sudoku. KenKen is a passion for people loving numbers and equations. For each problem to solve there is only one solution. In other words if you try to repeat a number in the same column or row, you're wrong. Then you have to replace the different numbers in different cells, which gets you to success. I bow to Tetsuya Miyamoto, the creator of KenKen. I'll be in Japan 3 weeks mid June to July and I'm curious to see how enthusiastic are Japanese for this new game.

I follow Will Shortz on NPR, my wife and I have been enjoying the NYT crossword puzzles (which Mr. Shortz edits) every Fri, Sat. and Sun., and we loved his movie "Crossworld." So when I read that he recommended Kenken, I had to try it. This book has filled many happy (and some infuriatingly frustrating!) hours of mine. I am truly addicted. You will be, too. As soon as you've finished your first one, you will be hooked. There isn't much material on advanced strategy on the web, but there are free videos to help you at http://mathmojo.com/kenken. If you liked Sudoku, you will really love Kenken.

This is fun! I highly recommend it to sudoku lovers and to anyone who enjoys logic puzzles. Volume 3 level spans easy to hard. Basic math challenges (add, subtract, multiply, divide) solved with sudoku-like logic on a sudoku-like grid with "cages." No repeat numbers in rows or columns, you know the drill. I'm sudoku-ed out at this point, but the KenKen puzzle is different enough that I can already feel the addictive possibilities of it. Also, my perception and mental clarity feel sharper after solving one or two of these. I like that part lots. Thanks and hugs to Will Shortz for bringing KenKen to the U.S.!
