Invaluable resource

We have this book in our hiking backpack and refer to it often. My kids use it to identify wildflowers on our hikes with ease. I have even just sat down and read through it, too. I like reading about the plant's history and common uses. The intro tells how to identify plants and is great for learning the anatomy of a flower, the differences in leaf or flower types, etc. Although it doesn't include every single wildflower in Ohio...that would be a big book...it does include the most commonly found wildflowers. The size makes it easy to bring along on walks, the photographs and easy to read descriptions are just what we were looking for in a wildflower field guide.

Good Wildflower Reference For Ohio

I bought this field guide after borrowing it from the library and taking it on an April photo shoot. It is a good reference and provides excellent photos of the Ohio wildflowers being described. I would give it 5 stars except I have found many wildflowers in the field that it does not cover. Stan has created an excellent field guide, but he needs to update it with additional Ohio flowers not covered and add 1-2 additional photos for each flower for greater perspective. I am a very visual learner, but find it difficult to use Peterson books for birds or wildflowers since they are drawing based and not photo based. Photos provide so much more detail and are more relevant to me than drawings. This is a key benefit of this field guide. Plus, it is compact for carrying along on a photo shoot.

Terrific, very kid-friendly!

I bought this and the Henn "Wildflowers of Ohio" for my little girl, now 4. She enjoys them both, but I think the format of this book is more user-friend for a small child as there is only one flower on each page and the picture is large. I have found one flower so far that was not in Tekiela's book but was in Henn's, so you might want to get both. Henn's book does not stay open as easily, so Tekiela's book is easier to use when you're squated looking at something. Tekiela's has little boxes next to the names in the index so you can check off the ones you find, so that is nice. In the Henn book, the font is smaller and the layout shows 3 flowers printed sideways, so you have to turn the book to read it. The font in the Tekiela book is larger and a normal, vertical layout. This might be important with kids or anyone who benefits from larger fonts. Both guides are very good though, so I'd be hard-pressed to chose between them. Probably you'll have to do like me and just buy both! LOL.
