This was a rather intriquing story that takes place in Scotland and London. The author showed good knowledge of the historical period in which this novel was based. I read this story a few years ago, then I rediscovered it on my shelf. The book tells the story of the two Gardiner children who were "bastards" of an important general. I found the characters very absorbing, but I wish that the author had delved a little bit deeper into the political and religious conflicts of the time. It would have given me more insight into the adults in the story. I found it intriquing that the twin brother was much more innnocent than his sister. The most interesting character was probably the conceited rake John Law. His emergence as a hero was astounding. I remember waiting for the sequel that was supposed to come, then finally giving up. Now it seems that the sequel has come and has gone out of print. I hope to find it soon to see what adventures await the Gardiners.
