This story is not told in the voice of Duke, but from his point of view when Duke happens upon a fishery in one of the great lakes states and falls in love with a goose who cannot fly. Despite thousands of years of migratory urges built into his way of living, Duke eschews flying/migrating to stay with the goose he loves. Together they have four female goslings and when Duke's mate is viciously attacked and killed he takes the kids and off they go to heartbreaking adventure after heartbreaking adventure. In his own unassuming way Duke brings wonder to the lives of two men at the trout fishery who look forward to seeing him with each passing year, for in this gander they see what life for them might be. This story rates right up there with Ring of Bright Water, Born Free and Old Yeller. Make sure the hankies are at the ready.
