Book Overview

"Time for bed,"
Mother Earth said.
"Not for a while,"
said her wild child.
"A song, first.
I need a song
to play in my head
before going to bed."

So Mother Earth
gave her child a song....

But then this wild child wants a snack and PJs and a kiss....
Lynn Plourde's text snaps and crackles like the leaves of fall as Mother Earth gently gets her daughter ready for bed. And Greg Couch's extraordinary...

Beautiful, lyrical, symbolic poetry

This book is an absolute delight to read. It's probably my favorite autumn book for kids. Tongue-twisty and reads like a song!

A beautiful book

I have collected childrens books for many years and this is one of the most beautiful books i have ever come across...each of my daughters love it and I love reading it...the language is beautiful and the illustrations are fantastic.

A Must-Have in Your Child's Library

I loved this book. I loved it even more when I read it to my 9-year-old daughter. We now have to read it over and over again before bedtime. It is such a beautifully illustrated book and the words reflect the sometimes exhausting patience and everlasting love we all have for our children. I cannot wait to read Winter Waits.

Magical

My 8 year old and my 3 year old granddaughters both love this book, as do I. It is wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated. We snuggle together with cocoa and read it as we watch the leaves swirl outside. It is a lovely way to introduce the Autumn season to the wee ones. I have already ordered Winter Waits and plan to own the whole set as soon as they are written. These are the kind of books memories are made of.

Fantastic Descriptive Language

I have used this book in the classroom with fourth graders to teach the foundations of figurative language (metaphors and simile). Lynn Plourde's descriptive language, combined with Greg Couch's soft illustrations provide a whimsical and vivid story for children of all ages! Wild Child is a lovely book that can be used across the curriculum.

Love at First Sight

This is a beautifully written tale of the oldest story in the book - a Mama trying to put her "wild child" to bed. In this case it happens to be Mother Earth and her daughter Autumn. With the first reading this book became an instant "old favorite". We've only owned it about a month, but already we have it almost memorized. Every night, before bed, my daughter likes to go through Autumn's whole list of reasons she's not ready for bed, and the routine she and Mother Earth follow to put her to bed. It has become part of my daughter's bed-time routine. The story is very engaging, and terrific for reading aloud. My daughter's favorite part is when the wild child is FINALLY ready for bed, after she has run of excuses "and mother Earth proclaimed, 'Now you ARE ready for bed.!' This time her wild child smiled Yes that wild child, with a wink and a wiggle, and stretch and giggle, hunkered below a blanket of snow. And let out a yawn so loud and so long. Her breaths grew deep as she fell fast alseep." As if that isn't enough, Greg Crouch's illustrations are uncommonly beautiful, and the perfect compliment to Lynn Plourde's charming tale. I also highly recommend the book WINTER WAITS. Thank you to both the author and illustrator. This book has already brought so much joy into our "reading time" and we anxiously await "SPRING HAS SPRUNG".
