I first read this book in high school; I am now forty-four and this wrenching-tale-with-a-tiny-glimmer-of-hope still continues to resonate. I also remember reading a review of this book in a 1971 issue of "Life" magazine, which had nothing but the highest praise for Patricia Dizenzo's "deliciously deadpan little novel." Definitely many cuts above the usual books published for young readers!
