"A good book to give anyone who asks, 'How can you be a Baptist after all that?' And an encouraging work for those who say, 'I can't stop being Baptist, but I am not a Baptist.' " -Will... This description may be from another edition of this product.
This book is less an explanation of Baptist beliefs (although that is covered by some of the contributors) than a defense of why one should remain in the Baptist denomination even though it's leadership is overwhelmingly conservative. A diverse group of moderate to liberal Baptist leaders (Jimmy Carter and Tony Campolo among them) speak here about the historic principles that - in their view - make the Baptist denomination unique and worth saving: non-creedalism, the sufficiency of every believer, local church self-government, and personal interpretation of the scriptures. They believe that these are the true foundations of the Baptist faith, not doctrinal uniformity. Succeeds as a civil attempt to foster communication within the denomination and let moderates know they aren't alone. Conservatives can draw insight from it as well.
