A useful compendium

Canon Brownrigg has provided a very useful service to students of the NT with this comprehensive alphabetical listing of [all] persons and [some] places mentioned in the NT, together with references. Some minor characters have only a brief paragraph; whereas other, more important, actors have extensive essays. One of the least attractive aspects of the book is the extremely small typeface, almost guaranteed to strain the eyes. A magnifying glass will be necessary for most users. And I was somewhat puzzled by the compiler's rather schizoid attitude to the Pastoral Epistles. Under the sub-heading of 'Timothy, letters to', the arguments against Pauline authorship are rehearsed [but not the counter-arguments!], and the section concludes that "the pastoral epistles are the work of an admirer of Paul" written late in the First Century. But under 'Tychicus', Canon Brownrigg shows no such reservation about the genuineness of the Pastorals, informing us that "he [Paul] again mentions Tychicus in his letters to Titus and Timothy". Well, you can't have it both ways! Critical opinion was, not too long ago, biased against their authenticity: but the pendulum has swung in recent years towards a welcome and robust defence of Pauline authorship.

Great book Contains excellent research material

This book is one of the most complete sources of information on characters in the New Testament that I could find. It contains many little known facts and goes into great detail whenever possible. This would be a great book for anyone interested in people and places in the New Testament for personal use or indepth college study.
