Top rate book for young children

This is an excellent book for young children, one of the best I've found to date. Each page has 18 different animals on it. These same animals appear throughout the book with minor changes. The book asks questions such as, who is crying, who is facing backwards, who is angry, or who is hiding. Not only does the child learn the 18 animals, but s/he is required to pay very close attention to notice the subtle differences by page. When we read this to our 20 month old, it was exciting to see him answer most of the questions correctly, showing us what he was capable of processing even though he wasn't yet at the stage of communicating those ideas.

Who's Hiding is a FUN book!

Although the book appears really simple on first flip-through, "Who's Hiding" really makes kids think ... and they learn new vocabulary and memorization skills while they're at it. We checked the book out of the library, but liked it so much that after renewing it once, bought it so we'd have our own copy.

ADORABLE AND FUN!

FOUND THIS BOOK AT THE LOCAL LIBRARY AND MY 2-YR-OLD SON IMMEDIATELY TOOK TO IT. HE LOVED FINDING WHICH ANIMAL WAS ACTING OUT WHAT BEHAVIOR. WHEN THE CAPITON ASKS, "WHO'S CRYING?", HIS EYES WOULD SEARCH AND SEARCH PAGE UNTIL HE'D FIND THE TEARY-EYED BUNNY AND POINT TO HIM SAYING, "RABBIT!", & MIMICKING HIS MISERABLE LITTLE FROWNY FACE. AND WHEN THE CAPTION ASKS, "WHO'S ANGRY?", AGAIN HE'D SEARCH AND SEARCH, POINTING OUT THE ANGRY ANIMAL AND SHOWING ME HIS CORRESPONDING MAD FACE. IT WAS GREAT FUN FOR BOTH OF US!

darling book, clever idea

Others have offered great reviews of what is in this book, so I'm just putting in my two cents on age appropriateness: I bought this book for my 4.5 year old daughter, and she liked reading through it once, but doesn't particularly want to read it again. I'm completely charmed by it (hence the 5 stars - she can fill out her own dang review if she disagrees!) and am looking forward to the day when my 1.5 year old boy is more interested in it, which should be soon.

Fun for Toddlers

Just look at this cover. How could you not pick it up and review it immediately? (I'm a sucker for symmetry.) On the surface of things, "Who's Hiding," by Saturu Onishi, is a simple book. 18 animals are lined up in rows of 6 across each double-page spread. They appear always in the same order: dog, tiger, hippo, zebra, bear, reindeer/kangaroo, lion, rabbit, giraffe, monkey, bull/rhino, pig, sheep, hen, elephant, cat. The animals, as you see, are colorful iconic representations and very appealing to a young child. Once we meet each of the animals (I can just imagine reading their names over and over again to a small child), the fun begins. The first question is "who's hiding?" Then the child must find the "missing" animal--in this case the reindeer with only antlers and facial features visible. Onishi also asks "who's crying?," "who's angry?," "who has horns?," "who's backwards?," and "who's sleeping?" The final page features only eyes on blacked-out pages and asks "Who's who?" You know you have a smart toddler if they begin rattling out the names in order. "Who's Hiding" is aimed at the 0-3 audience and is sure to provide hours of read-along fun. Enjoy!
