Is there such a thing as a Doctrinally Neutral Education?

Gary DeMar is a talented author and historian. This collection of short essays laid out in 15 chapters demonstrates his clear logic and attention to detail. Each of the brief chapters is extensively footnoted so that the reader or researcher can dig further into the particular topics that interest him or her. The essays are collected into three main categories: 1. Who's in Charge? 2. The Pitfall of Pluralism 3. Dispensing with Educational Mythology In his first chapter, Mr. DeMar discusses the history of modern educational control and the power that Adolf Hitler understood about capturing the minds of students. In this book he addresses: * Our courts' appeals to International Law * A brief history of some of our higher education such as Harvard, Princeton, and Yale * The development of educational philosophy * Definition of a Biblical Worldview * The basis for moral understanding * Evolution and Intelligent Design * Examining historical facts and more In chapter 8, one of my favorite essays in this book, Mr. DeMar addresses common objections many Christians have to reclaiming their child's education from the hands of the state. This book is a must-read for those who are interested in improving education for their children and for others.

Interesting and provocative

In "Whoever Controls the Schools Rules the World," Gary DeMar mounts an argument against the modern public school system. Part 1, titled "Who's In Charge?", discusses 20th century examples of student indoctrination, the problems of teaching any system of values unconnected to Christianity, the idealogical shift of American universities, the need for a comprehensive biblical worldview, and the importance of considering the end results of our present educational choices. Part 2, "The Pitfall of Pluralism," covers common objections to leaving the public school system as well as problems with government schooling, such as Darwinian indoctrination, intolerant tolerance, and the teaching of genetic determinism. Part 3, "Dispensing with Educational Mythology," contains various demonstrations of historical myths that are often passed off as fact to unsuspecting schoolchildren (DeMar, interestingly, shows how easy this is to unsuspectingly do by using examples of historical inaccuracies that many Christians accidentally repeat). As an epilogue to the book, DeMar includes his essay "A Tale of Two Buses," which libertarians, mingled with a few of the more ornery conservatives, will love. Most everyone else will be scandalized, but DeMar's point is one that all of the above would do well to consider. The book's main fault is that it fails to connect the various chapters together, leaving the reader to connect what amount to over a dozen individual essays in his own mind. However, that task is not overly difficult, and the information the book covers (and uncovers) makes the effort well worth it.
