Fabulous

Here's a collection of quotations from 31 great Americans that will amuse the late grammar and early middle school set, and teach them a but of history at the same time. There are many serious figures quoted--including presidents Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln and Calvin Coolidge; patriots Patrick Henry and Martin Luther King; and the more lighthearted and artistic American celebrities, like comedian Groucho Marx, painter Jackson Pollock, poet Emily Dickinson, jazz musician Louis Armstrong and Irish folk heroine "Mother" Jones. Kids will also learn a bit from explorers and pioneers, philosophers and sportsmen, and a few other colorful folks like inventor Thomas Edison. Another true delight of this book, besides the quotations, are the fabulous pen and ink caricatures of the personalities quoted. That alone might account for the spectacular price for new copies of this book on the secondary market as I write this review in April 2009---since the illustrations are really spectacular.
