Not a story ... more like one long stream of thought

This book started out kind of fun: an ordinary introspective guy reflecting on his middle-age life. By the end of it, I couldn't take any more of his whining. I wanted to steal Cher's move from Moonstruck: slap him (hard) and tell him to snap out of it. OR: just shoot him to shut him up.
