Hollow doesn't Hit `em over the Head with History
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 22 years ago
This gentle little book doesn't hit the reluctant young historian over the head with history lessons, they just come naturally with the flow of the tale. Young Lillie Mae Worth's Daddy went Over There in World War I and never came back. Her Mother, forced to work in a factory during his absence, is killed in an industrial accident, leaving Lillie Mae with a witch of a maternal aunt, (my mind's eye conjures up this woman as Clara's nanny in the Shirley Temple movie *Heidi*) who quickly appropriates what small estate there is and railroads Lillie Mae off to live in rural western Kentucky with paternal Great Aunt Esther and Great Uncle Dallas. Here Lillie Mae and her readers encounter country school, moonshine and revenuers, and learn life lessons that sometimes "good" and "bad" are not what they initially appear.
