Whispers in the Night was a gripping read. I felt the book transcended the usual confines of a category romance with the depth of character exploration. The heroine has hid from her own innate sexuality by selecting a relationship with an elderly man who provides for her comfort and makes little in the way of demands on her. The past hurts of her chaotic childhood are all too true of those children who fall through the cracks in dysfunctional and dangerous families. She's hiding from life and the death of her husband, and is staying at a cottage in the Catskills where she meets the hero. The Hero comes with his own deep issues. Wrongly accused of corruption as a cop, he spends time in jail, only to be later released. The coping strategies developed in jail still run deep, and he fights them every step of the way, as he falls in love with the heroine. In the end, they prove stronger, and he stands on the verge of loosing the love that has become his chance for redemption. You are left at one point not knowing if they'll succeed, even though intuitively you know the story will end well. In my opinion, when a book draws you in that way and allows you to suspend all conventions including the one that there will be a happy ending, the author has succeeded and gone above and beyond in her craft. The villain is not easily identified, but once he's located, everything falls into place nicely. I would heartily recommend this, particularly for the character study and the pacing. I liked the way the author let the relationship unfold rather than rush it due to convention
