While I am not going to say that I thought this was the greatest novel for children I have ever read-- I will say that my second daughter (age 8) and I had a very fun time reading it together. Yaccarino has been a favorite artist of hers (and mine) since she began reading picture books so I was very pleased to see him creating books for the young fans of his who are growing up.The story is fairly simple. Roger and his Sister have to track down their kidnapped parents, and they rush all over the world-- but it is a fantastic, Yaccarino-world, where all sorts of facts about science are turned on their head. The ending is a bit heavy handed, but there is a nice lesson to be learned. Yaccarino's artwork in the book was a particular treat. A bit more stylized that we are used to seeing from him, but it works very well in the book. And my daughter certainly appreciated that just because we were reading a novel did not mean we had to stop seeing pictures on each page! The real question: Can Yaccarino write? The writing, to be honest, was a bit uneven but I think I was noticing that much more than my 8 year old daughter. The characters were wild and vivid and fun and that was what she was after! A very fun read aloud that can last a few nights.
