Fun little book for your children

Brief Summary: In this delightful picture book story, Bailey, a young bear is awaiting the arrival of a brother or sister in his family. This being the case, his inquisitive mind begins to think and wonder--what about God? When was He born? His grandmother helps him through his questions and he learns that God has always existed, that He's always been there, and always will be. Positive Elements: I enjoyed the bright, colorful illustrations and fun, yet clear storytelling which takes important spiritual truth to a level children can understand and grow from.

Waiting for a brother....

Reviewed by Grace Schaefer (age 8) for Reader Views (12/08) In the book "When Was God Born?," Bailey wants a baby brother. He waits with his grandmother at the hospital for his mom to have a baby. While they are waiting, Bailey is squirming in his seat and the grandmother is trying to read a book. Bailey then asks about God and when was God born. Grandma then told Bailey the story of how God made the earth and that God has always been here. Bailey was amazed. My favorite part is the pictures. They are colorful. I like Bailey's face and hair. I also like that the book is about God because I am a Christian and I like reading about God. I want to read more about Bailey. Bailey is a great boy. I felt good and happy after reading this "When Was God Born?" by Phillip W. Rodgers. I learned that God is amazing and great.

Fun with sweet message

"When Was God Born?" is fun to read and has a sweet, loving message for children and adults! Our children have enjoyed all of Phillip Rogers' books. They were especially excited to have him come to our church to read one of his books and teach them how to draw Bailey! This book is a good addition to your home or church children's library and is also great for giving to those who may not initially be interested in a book about God.

Fantastic new entry in excellent children's book series

When Was God Born by Phillip W. Rodgers is his most recent entry in the Discovering God series starring Bailey Bear Cub. Bailey and his grandma are in the maternity waiting room at the hospital awaiting the birth of his new sibling, which Bailey is certain will be a boy. During the long wait, Bailey starts to wonder if God was ever a baby and if He was born. This is what Mia has to say: I learned about God in this book and that he wasn't born at all! He created everything, and He planned to make me before everything else. The little bear's name was Bailey, and he was waiting for his little brother or sister to be born. The last page made me laugh, because his grandma said that the baby might be a girl! My favorite picture was with all of the babies. I really liked the pictures of the world being made, and when he was painting the heart, and that God planned to make me! Now my thoughts: Rodgers' tackles a difficult question with ease. The rhyming couplets are never forced and and give the story bounce. Grams answers Baileys' questions with just enough depth to answer them truly without overwhelming him, plus she emphasizes God's desire for a relationship with him. Mia was deeply touched by the knowledge that God planned her before creating the world (as you can tell from her comments), and I think that it's a notion that will stick with her. Bailey's humorous asides on several pages are charming, especially his idea of God's Baby-Making machine. Mia laughed out loud at that, and so did I. As soon as we closed the cover on this book, she immediately demanded that we read it again. The second time through, she made a point of figuring out certain words, like God and you. When I brought the book out today to take her picture with it, she asked it we could read it again at bedtime. Obviously this is a book with staying power. I will be looking for the other books in the series!
