When Morning Comes¡XPatricia Calvert

Patricia Calvert writes about a runaway teenager girl in search of herself, love, and security in her novel When Morning Comes. Cat Kinkaid has a bold and strong ¡§leopard¡¨ personality on the outside, but in the inside she is insecure and vulnerable. She has been sent to her third foster home, where she is to stay with foster mother Mrs. Annie Bowen, a beekeeper, and a neighbor Hooter Lewis. Upon Cat¡¦s first few days at Sweetberry Farm, she is reluctant to stay and immediately plans for her escape back to her ¡§jungle¡¨ lifestyle at the Hideout city streets. When she returns back to her friends and family, she realizes that perhaps her old self-destructive lifestyle was not a place where her heart felt safe. She then makes the decision to turn back to Sweetberry Farm, to the people that accept her. I think this is a well-written novel, with a few characters that are each realistic, unique, and powerful to the story in their own ways. The author captures the reality of the insecurities of a teenager¡¦s search for oneself. I think at some point in time, everyone feels lost in themselves, and steps forth with dare and courage to find something new, and find someplace to call home. In Cat¡¦s case, she did not choose herself to be sent to a foster home but in the end, when she returns back to her past, she realizes that the new home is actually the place where she can safely call ¡§home¡¨. I also think friends are very important in one¡¦s life, especially friends so close that they become your second family. As Cat experienced, her real family was not there for her, and learned to find the comfort of friends that eventually became her family. I enjoyed reading this novel very much. At times I felt sympathetic, scared, and disbelief for the characters, which I believe the author is very talented, because I could understand how the characters were feeling. Each turn of the page leads to something new that finally resolves to a satisfactory ending that made me smile inside.
