A nice book that gets overlooked--appreciate the trees
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 15 years ago
The previous reviewer summed it up nicely: cutting down a tree might be tempting, until you pause to think of all that it provides. This is not a militant book in any way--indeed there's little mention of the tree's contribution to the Earth. It's only seen from a utilitarian point of view. Environmentalists might want a bit more holistic message. Less environmentally inclined folks can still appreciate teaching their kids to think before using, and to appreciate nature. The illustrations are quite nice and the story has just the right pace and flow. Suddenly one realizes what how lovely it is: that overlooked tree in the yard is a bounty of goodness.
Teaching children about making choices

This was one of my favorite books to read to my son when he was young. A father is going to cut down the chestnut tree in the yard and the children are excited because of all the fun they will have when the tree is cut down (climb on the tree, use the wood to build toys and a fort, etc.)Then they stop to think about what it would be like when the tree is gone (no shade to rest in after playing, no leaves to rake and play in, etc.)and they decide to keep the tree after all. The story shows children how to think through a decision and its consequences. The book is beautifully illustrated and written in rhyming verse.
Our kids LOVED this book!

This is a wonderfully illustrated yet simple book for children from toddler stage through about age 5 or 6, when kids start to read. The rhyme is simple but the message powerful (trees are valuable!). Our kids (now 10 and 12) loved this book and can still repeat some of its rhyme.
