Review of What's My Style

I received my copy of What's My Style? on Sunday afternoon and had finished it by Monday evening. I am a slow reader, but this book is a fast and compelling read. Although its focus is on learning styles of teens, I felt liberated in meeting myself on page after page. This book is for all human beings. The best way for me to show why I am so excited about this book is to describe how I used it with a student. (I tutor math students.) Today (Tuesday) I had a session with a new student going into 8th grade. I could not wait to use this book to help him find his own learning style. He recognized himself right away in answering questions from page iii of the introduction. I talked to him about left and right brain and gave him "The Hot Fudge Sundae Test." He does think in pictures. He completed the left-brain/right-brain questionnaire from the book. Not surprisingly all of my students fall into the right-brain side of the continuum as this new student did. Math tests are left-brain activities as they ask for processes and numbers and words. Right-brain learners store their information in pictures and come up short of words and processes to use on math tests. The information in Betty's book on how to fill the left-brain with information in a format useful on tests is straight forward and practical. All of her suggestions are easy to understand and to implement. What's My Style? now has a permanent place on my tutoring table to be used during sessions, and I want each of my students to have their own copy. I myself will be able to take better notes at seminars having read her lesson on note-taking. And now I understand that my notes put the information into my left brain. Buy the book. It will be the best $[...] you ever spent. You will meet yourself and understand that your own style is ok, whether you are a teenager or an adult.

What's My Style a Big Winner!

"What's my Style?" is directed to teens, but let me tell you, the test and study secrets will also work for college students as well as for anyone studying for professional entrance exams. As a nurse educator I know that procrastination does not end at age 19. This book is a quick and easy read. Students, parents and teachers will quickly recognize their own preference for right-brain or left-brain learning. The content on setting one's intent, test taking, study tips, and time management all offer simply stated and easily followed instructions for test taking success, whether written or essay. This book by Betty Caldwell is a refreshing and concise approach for overcoming test-taking anxiety.

Wish I had this book

As a past guidance counselor who used many methods of study skills, I still had a hard time reaching some students. This book gives me insight as to why. With real life personal stories, illustrations and helpful suggestions, I believe I could have reached those students in a more helpful way. This book would have been good for helping them not only understand their learning style but teaching them how to use it to their advantage. I would have liked to have had this book when I was teaching study skills.

What's My Style

The test and study secrets recommended in "What's My Style" turned out to be the ideal solution for helping our grandson, who didn't test well although he was able to function exceptionally well in class on a daily basis. He was challenged by tests. After using the test and study recommendations in this book, he is now an honor roll student. He actually comes home each Friday excited about having concurred the tests testing his comprehension/learning for the week or a particular unit of study. He's actually eager to take a test, now, and demonstrate his ability to master information - enabling him to brag to us and we certainly brag about him to family members and close friends. We are grateful to have found an answer to how to study and effective test taking for our grandson. Thank you!
